Annual Installed Capacity: 2006 to 2015

The Global Wind Energy Council produces the highly informative 'Annual Market Report' which is packed with statistics on wind capacity, by country, world-wide. 2015 saw record annual additions of 63.013 gigawatts (GW or thousands megawatts) representing annual market growth of 22 percent.  Out of the total a stunning 30.5 GW or 48 percent, came from China alone. The US market reached 8.6 GW on the back of a strong fourth quarter surge, and Germany led a stronger than expected performance in Europe with a record 6 GW of new installations, including 2.3 GW offshore.

In terms of the total installed capacity worldwide: the following chart shows steady growth since 2006; or a total increase of 483 percent over the period.

And something from last year: in 2014 and for the first time, the world generated a greater percentage of its electricity, using wind turbines, than Saskatchewan.
